We want to thank everyone for their incredible support of Prop 37 to label genetically engineered foods. Unfortunately, we came up short at the voting booth. Despite being outspent 6 to 1, the California Right to Know campaign with 47 percent of the electorate last night, with more than 4.2 million Californians registering their support for labeling of genetically engineered foods.
Dave Murphy, Co-Chair of Yes on 37 and Founder and Executive Director of Food Democracy Now! issued the following statement following the defeat of Prop 37.
“Over the last year, millions of Californians—moms and dads, farmers, retailers, nurses and consumers—have come together in support of our fundamental to know what’s in our food – a right enjoyed by people in 61 other countries.. And today, we are (insert number) million votes is a giant victory.”
“Tonight is also a grim reminder of the corrupting influence of huge multinational corporations such as Monsanto and other companies can have on our democracy. But, thanks to Proposition 37, millions of families learned for the first time that there are legitimate questions about the health and environmental impacts of genetically engineered foods, and that as moms and dads, they really don’t get to decide what goes on their family’s kitchen table . This campaign will go down in history as the galvanizing force of the food movement that will not be stopped until we win the right to know about genetically engineered foods for all Americans.”
“We are so proud of the millions of moms, dads and consumers who have worked with us on this campaign and who stood up for our right to know what what is in our food. This is not the end of our campaign – Our coalition movement is too powerful to stop, and we will continue fighting for consumer choice, fairness and transparency.”
